Why You Should Delete Your Facebook

So the other day, after weighing the pros and cons, I decided to delete my Facebook. Why you ask? Because it's the right decision. Now before you flip out and tell me how big of an idiot I am and how the only reason I deleted it was because no one would add me, let me explain why Facebook sucks...and why you should delete yours.

Reason #1: "Friends" Who Don't care.

Facebook is FULL of people who don't care about you, or, your status updates. Of the 1,873 "friends" you have, you might be actual friends with 5 of them. I'm not sure how many times I received friend requests from people who talked crap about me in high school, but I lost count and I'm pretty sure they weren't trying to spark up a friendship. And of those 1,873 "friends", 1,800 of them are only friends with you to creep on your pictures. What great "friends"! =]

Reason #2: Judgment

This could be grouped in with fake "friends", but I decided against it. Nearly everything you do on Facebook (status updates, pictures, interests, etc.) is judged by nearly everyone who sees it. I'm EXTREMELY guilty of this as well, which was just another reason to get rid of Facebook because it caused me to be a complete jerk about other people. But seriously, no one really cares about your favorite bands, movies, or books! They especially don't care about your favorite quotations because half of them are inside jokes you have with your dog that no one understands. As you can see, judgment is kind of a problem I'm working on...

Reason #3: Facebook Chat

It's annoying and it sucks. Enough said.

Reason #4: Drunken Statuses and Pictures.

Is there anything more annoying than signing onto Facebook on Saturday afternoon, and having your News Feed FULL of people talking about how wasted they got last night and "OMG what happened last night?!!?!? I REALLY need to stop drinking! LOLZ!"? Didn't think so. Stay classy people..

Reason #5:Status Games/Application Requests

About a month before I left Facebook, a new fad swept the social networking king...Status Games. If you're not familiar with this annoying trend, it was where you put your status as this: "Message me a number, and I'll tell you what I think about you! ;)". People would then send you random numbers to your inbox (popular ones were 69, 666, 23, 34532, 111111111111, etc.) and after receiving someone's message with a number, your status looked something like this: "69: I love you girly! you make everyone smile because you're such a warm-hearted person. We deffffff need to hang out more =]". Now multiply this process by about 200 people updating this every 2 minutes...yea, annoying. When it comes to application requests, I don't think I really need to explain. Let's just say I can go my entire life without ever hearing the word "Farmville" again.

Of course, these were just a few of the many reasons I decided to leave Facebook, and I probably could have come up with a million better reasons, but those were the biggest ones that pushed me over the edge. In fact, I want to know what your biggest problems/concerns about Facebook are. Leave a comment if you want explaining what would make you leave Facebook if you still have one (which I'm sure you do.), or what made you leave if you decided to leave it already. Peace bros and ladies!

  2. I was so excited to see that you left a comment on my blog...I almost didn't believe it was you, but then realized that I don't know that many Brittons. Anyway, I love that you have a blog. Yes, they're pretentious and blogging (and bloggers) get annoying at times, but I really enjoy writing and reading. It can be a cool (albeit, anonymous) community and I'm glad you've joined. I will definitely be checking in to see what you have to say: I've always enjoyed/appreciated your point of view, B.

I hate that facebook is the only way I keep in contact with so many people that I truly love. I'm on the edge of deleting mine too, but need to work up the courage to just contact those people regularly on the phone and skype, instead of relying on the copout that facebook provides.

  3. Yea, I would've probably kept mine if I lived far away from a lot of friends and family. Facebook is a great thing if you use it the right way, but it's turning into MySpace quickly so I had to go.

  4. I loved this post Britton!!! The only reason I keep facebook is because I dont have a phone...otherwise game on facebook deletion. i think the most annoying thing on facebook for me is that people are so fake on it. Everything they put on there is so carefully evaluated before posted so people think the best of you. Kind of goes along with your judgment issue. I heard a great sermon one time that talked about how facebook is kind of like the fig leafs Adam and Eve used in the old testament. If your not familiar with the reference, which I think you are, Adam and Eve used fig leaves to cover themselves up after they had sinned for the first time. They became embarrassed to show themselves fully to one another, as well as to God. But before they had sinned, being naked was no big deal. God intended it to be that way. Facebook is like our own modern day fig leaf in that we feel like we have to hide our true selves from everybody. Life was not intended to be lived that way.

Definitely glad you decided to star blogging. Way less drama, way more truth.
